Profhilo in the UK: What It Does, How Many Sessions and Who It Suits
Most people need two Profhilo sessions about four weeks apart, then a top-up every six months or so. Here's what the treatment does, what the evidence shows and who it suits.
How many Profhilo sessions you need: two, then top-ups
Most people need two Profhilo sessions about four weeks apart, followed by a single top-up session every six months or so if they like the result. That two-session course is the protocol the published studies use, so when you ask how many Profhilo sessions you need, it's the honest starting point.
Some practitioners suggest a third session for older or heavily sun-damaged skin. That's a judgement call rather than a fixed rule, and a good injector will tell you why they think you need it before you book it.
Profhilo is an injectable hyaluronic acid gel, sold as a medical device. It isn't a filler in the usual sense. It's designed to spread through the skin rather than sit in one spot and add volume, which is why the manufacturer calls it "bio-remodelling" and why the results are subtle. You can see which clinics near you offer it on our Profhilo treatment page.
What happens at each session
A standard face treatment uses one 2ml syringe, injected at five points on each side of the face. These ten spots are known as the BAP (bio aesthetic points) technique, chosen to avoid the larger blood vessels. The appointment itself is short, usually well under half an hour including skin cleansing.
You'll leave with small raised bumps at each injection point. They usually flatten within a day or two as the gel spreads. Some people get mild redness, tenderness or a small bruise. Allow for that if you have an event, and don't book your second session the week before a wedding.
The second session repeats the first about four weeks later. Some clinics also treat the neck, décolletage or the backs of the hands, which usually means extra syringes and extra cost.
Profhilo results: what changes and when
People describe the result as skin that looks more hydrated, a little firmer and less crepey. You may notice a glow within the first week or two, but the main change builds over the weeks after the second session.
The published studies back up that timeline. In a 2022 study of 25 people treated on the neck, two injections 30 days apart improved skin roughness and laxity at the one-month and four-month checks.
Be clear about what it won't do. It won't lift sagging jowls, fill deep folds or replace lost cheek volume. If that's what bothers you, a practitioner should talk you through dermal fillers or a surgical opinion instead of selling you a skin booster.
Does Profhilo work? What the evidence can and can't tell you
Yes, for mild to moderate laxity and dull, dehydrated skin, the evidence points to a real but modest improvement. The awkward part is how thin that evidence is. The studies are small, with dozens of people rather than hundreds, like the 25 in the neck study above. They follow people for months, not years, and none is a large independent trial.
Safety data looks reassuring so far. A 2020 review of worldwide post-marketing reports covering more than 40,000 treated patients logged 12 adverse event reports, none classed as serious. Those are reports doctors chose to send in, though, so they show the pattern rather than the true rate.
Who Profhilo suits, and who it doesn't
Profhilo tends to suit you if your skin looks dull, dry or crepey, you have early, mild laxity on the face or neck, and you want a subtle change nobody can quite pin down. You also need to be happy to commit to a course and top-ups.
It's probably the wrong treatment if you want more volume in your lips or cheeks, you have marked sagging or heavy jowls, or you want a visible change to one specific line. A one-off "treat and forget" approach doesn't fit it either.
Most practitioners won't treat you if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have an active skin infection or cold sore in the area, or if you've reacted badly to a hyaluronic acid product before. Tell them about any medicines you take, especially anything that thins the blood, and any autoimmune condition.
It also helps to know how it compares with the other injectables you'll see on a clinic's menu.
| Treatment | What it does | Typical course |
|---|---|---|
| Profhilo (skin booster) | Spreads through the skin to improve hydration and laxity | Two sessions a month apart, then top-ups |
| Dermal filler | Adds volume or structure in a chosen spot | Often one session, repeated as it breaks down |
| Anti-wrinkle injections | Relax the muscles that cause expression lines | One session, repeated every few months |
Our dermal fillers guide covers the second row in detail.
The warning signs that need help now
Serious problems after Profhilo are uncommon, but any injection of hyaluronic acid can, rarely, block a blood vessel. Know these signs before your first appointment.
- Call 999 or go to A&E if you have any change in your vision, or signs of a stroke such as facial drooping, arm weakness or slurred speech.
- Contact your injector straight away if you have severe or worsening pain, skin that turns white, grey, blue or blotchy, or skin that feels cold. These need same-day assessment. If you can't reach them, call NHS 111.
- Call NHS 111 if the area becomes hotter, redder and more swollen over the following days, or you develop a fever. That can mean infection.
Because Profhilo is hyaluronic acid, it can be broken down with an enzyme injection if a problem needs it. That needs a prescriber, so ask before you book who would handle a complication and how quickly.
Who can inject it in England, and why that matters
Here's the uncomfortable truth: right now, almost anyone in England can inject Profhilo. The Botulinum Toxin and Cosmetic Fillers (Children) Act 2021 bans cosmetic filler injections for under-18s and defines a filler broadly, but it sets no training standard for treating adults.
A licensing scheme is coming. The government set out its plans in its August 2025 consultation response, with procedures sorted into green, amber and red risk categories. As of October 2026 the scheme isn't in force and no start date has been set.
Until it is, the checks are yours to make. Look for a practitioner on a professional register, such as a doctor, dentist or nurse, and check that register yourself. Our safe injector checklist walks you through it, and the Save Face explainer covers what a voluntary register does and doesn't prove.
What drives the cost of a course
We don't quote prices, because they vary too much to be useful. What you'll pay depends on a few things:
- Number of syringes. The face course is two. Neck, hands or chest add more.
- Top-ups. Count the maintenance sessions, not only the first two, when you compare clinics.
- Who injects you. A doctor or dentist with years of injecting experience usually charges more than a newer practitioner.
- Where you are. Central city clinics tend to cost more. You can compare clinics by area on our locations page.
Be wary of a course price far below the local going rate. Ask to see the sealed product box opened in front of you, and ask what's included if you have a reaction.
Frequently asked questions
How many Profhilo sessions do I need?
Most people need two sessions about four weeks apart. After that, a single top-up session roughly every six months maintains the result, though your practitioner may adjust this for your skin.
How long do Profhilo results last?
The published studies follow people for three to four months after treatment, so there's no solid long-term data. In practice most clinics suggest a top-up around every six months.
Can I have just one session of Profhilo?
You can, but the studies use two sessions, so one session alone is less likely to give the result you're paying for. If budget is tight, ask the practitioner to be straight about what one session can achieve.
Is Profhilo the same as a filler?
No. It's made of hyaluronic acid like most fillers, but it's designed to spread through the skin rather than add volume in one spot. It won't change the shape of your face.
Does Profhilo hurt?
Most people describe a sharp scratch at each of the ten injection points and a stinging feeling as the gel goes in. It's brief, and many clinics apply a numbing cream first.
When will I see Profhilo results?
Some people notice their skin looks brighter within a week or two. The main improvement usually shows in the weeks after the second session.
